Venice Branch (FL) American Fellowship #4390
In April 2014, the Branch voted to establish an American Fellowship in the amount of $200,000 through AAUW national offices. The initial funding was $25,000 which had been bequeathed to the Branch from the estates of two former members. It is now up to us to continue to complete this endowment within fifteen years. At completion, a scholarship will be awarded each year in perpetuity to a deserving woman. American Fellowships support doctoral candidates completing dissertations, women who are completing research for publication, or scholars seeking funds for post-doctoral research. Our Fellowship was named the Venice Branch (FL) American Fellowship to celebrate the work of the Venice Branch towards support of women and girls through advocacy, education, philanthropy, and research.
Giving to our Venice Fellowship fund is easy. Checks should be made out to AAUW, and include Fund #4390 on the Memo line. Checks can be submitted to the AAUW National Office (AAUW Planned Giving Department, 1111 Sixteenth St. NW, Washington, DC 20036), or sent to the Venice post office box. We will then send the checks on to National. We also highly encourage our members to use this Fellowship Fund number when you make contributions in your legacy to the Venice Branch or the AAUW national endowment programs. When you contribute through your estate endowment, be sure to let the National Office know of your plans. You can obtain the enrollment forms through the Venice Branch Endowment Chairman. You do not have to indicate the amount of your legacy. That is totally private. You will become a member of the AAUW Legacy Circle and receive a beautiful Swarovski pin to honor your generosity and commitment to the future of women and girls. By always remembering this number—4390—you help us grow this very special fund.
Tech Trek Supports STEM Education for Eighth Grade Girls
AAUW Venice helped to make a difference in the lives of 60 girls this past summer (2016) with Florida Tech Trek. Florida Tech Trek is a weeklong STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) residence camp designed to create interest, excitement and self-confidence in girls entering eighth grade. Girls from all over the state of Florida were at Palm Beach State College and Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton in June to learn, grow and have fun. This was a life changing experience! The cost for each Camper is $1000.00 – parents of the girls are only asked to contribute $50.00 – the remainder is up to you.
The Venice branch of AAUW is responsible for many aspects of the camp. We received 130 nominations from teachers at 22 different schools in the state. The nominees filled out applications (including an essay) and then were interviewed by AAUW members. The final selection of the 60 girls to attend Florida Tech Trek was announced in April. Volunteers filled many roles in making the camp run smoothly, including spending the week as dorm monitors.
At Tech Trek, girls are immersed in a world that empowers and encourages them to think about themselves as future scientists, engineers, mathematicians, and computer specialists. Campers take part in activities, like building and programming robots, extracting their own DNA, learning how computer simulations are used to predict weather patterns, and much more! Tech Trek has been shown to significantly increase girls’ self-confidence and their interest in and excitement about the STEM fields.

Legal Advocacy Fund
The AAUW Legal Advocacy Fund (LAF) works to challenge sex discrimination in higher education and the workplace. Our resources range from community outreach programs, to backing of major cases. Sex discrimination today takes a variety of forms: unfair pay, pregnancy discrimination, sexual harassment, sexual assault, and violations of Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972, which can affect both women and men. LAF addresses these barriers by informing people of their rights and using the legal system to seek justice and change.
AAUW is fighting violence against women on college campuses by supporting the Campus SaVE Act, supporting the White House’s “It’s on Us” public awareness campaign, and standing up for victims of domestic abuse through our unwavering support of the Violence Against Women Act.
Your donation will help us protect generations of college women, support military women, and create a safer future for our daughters, granddaughters, and nieces.
Non-traditional Scholarship Fund
The Venice Branch of the American Association of University Women is proud to annually present Non-traditional College Scholarships to deserving women. These women are non-traditional students because they have had their education plans disrupted due to personal, family or financial pressures. The demands of today’s marketplace have made a college education extremely important for entrance to, and success in most professional fields. We are very proud of our scholarship winners, as they have put a great deal of effort and thought into their chosen career paths.
